There are some people out there who buy their kids little "pocket pets" for ex: hamsters, guinea pigs, dwarf bunnies, turtles, and most talked about on here Hermitcrabs. Most people do not do research when it comes to their kid because they figure the pet store actually gives out viable information. However, that is not true. These guys are put in colored shells and homes that usually look like this: Contrary to what many think, this is not their care and people usually never do actual research on their pets (In this case hermit crabs) which is why they don't live but at most a year. These guys suffer in these small cages and all is incorrect in this setup. It's never too late to research, but it benefits all involved if you have everything set up for them beforehand. Pet stores usually do not actually know care about the animals that they sell and take the money and go. To go into simpler terms, it would be like you living in a bathroom all day with food. It is nothing more than a small bathroom for them. It would be like you chaining your dog outside all its life. This doesn't even count the pellet foods killing them. These setups are terrible and always dig deeper before getting an animal. Pocket pets are a whole other subject. These guys are not play toys and are not for you to play with and touch all the time. They are living too. all information on proper care can be found here.
It is also recommended that if you plan to get hermit crabs you get them from captive breeders to keep the ones in the wild safe and stop the abuse they have to go through. There is also an adoption page on the LHCOS Facebook page that allows you to know you have the proper setup, and then adopt a hermit crab from in your area and give it a proper home the previous owner cannot provide anymore.
